Recently, the world’s leading methanol dual-fuel smart VLCC owned by Seacons has officially commenced commercial operations. The vessel was delivered four months ahead of schedule. Leveraging its clean energy propulsion strengths, it serves key crude oil shipping lanes linking Southeast Asia and the Middle East, enabling the company to get ahead of the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) new carbon emission reduction regulations for shipping and setting an industry benchmark for the green upgrade of ocean-going tankers.

Against the backdrop of accelerated carbon neutrality transformation across the global shipping sector, conventional fuel-powered vessels are subject to increasingly stringent carbon and sulfur emission controls. As one of the most commercially mature clean marine fuels available today, methanol stands out for its low pollution levels, convenient storage and transportation, and remarkable emission reduction performance, making it the preferred option for major shipping firms upgrading their fleets. The newly operational methanol dual-fuel VLCC can seamlessly switch between methanol and conventional marine fuel modes. It drastically cuts emissions of carbon dioxide, sulfur oxides and nitrogen oxides during voyages, while adapting to fuel supply conditions at ports across different regions, greatly boosting operational flexibility on shipping routes.

Drawing on the transport capacity of this new energy tanker, Seacons focuses on developing cross-border crude oil trunk routes between Southeast Asia and the Middle East. On one hand, it leverages the dense port network across Southeast Asia to build efficient ocean logistics corridors for crude oil and refined oil products. On the other hand, its green vessel certification qualifies the company for low-carbon shipping incentives offered by ports in multiple countries, substantially lowering overall voyage operating costs and building differentiated core competitiveness amid fierce competition in the dry bulk and tanker shipping markets.

From an industry perspective, the launch of this methanol dual-fuel VLCC marks a pivotal move by Seacons to optimize its fleet mix and expand eco-friendly ocean-going capacity. It also delivers a replicable practical model for regional shipping companies retrofitting aging vessels with clean energy power systems. With the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism and global shipping carbon taxes gradually taking effect, carriers that deploy new energy vessels in advance can effectively mitigate future operational pressures stemming from rising carbon compliance costs.

According to the company’s operational roadmap, Seacons will continue ramping up investments in its green fleet by adding multiple dual-fuel bulk carriers and tankers. It will further expand low-carbon transport capacity on core routes covering Southeast Asia, Australia and the Middle East, deepen its presence in nearshore and ocean-going bulk commodity logistics, consolidate its competitive edge amid the low-carbon transition of the shipping industry, and advance the environmentally sustainable development of global maritime transport.
