Thailand’s Ministry of Transport plans to launch a new round of large-scale infrastructure investment in 2026, covering 15 major transport infrastructure projects with a total value of 1.88 trillion Thai baht (approximately USD 59 billion). Although the new government has been in office for only four months, transport construction remains a top priority. A slew of landmark schemes including Phase II of the China-Thailand High-Speed Railway, double-track railways and the Land Bridge Project are expected to kick off bidding or enter substantive construction stages in 2026, bringing new opportunities for Chinese enterprises.

The Ministry of Transport will deploy an initial budget of over 265 billion baht (around USD 8.3 billion) for the 2026 fiscal year, of which capital expenditure accounts for 234 billion baht to expedite multiple key transport infrastructure schemes. Tendering and contract signing procedures for these projects will be rolled out in phases throughout FY2026. In the rail transit sector, flagship works include Phase II of the China-Thailand High-Speed Railway, the second phase of the double-track railway programme, and the extension of Bangkok’s Red Line.

Phase II of the China-Thailand High-Speed Railway stretches 357.12 kilometres from Nakhon Ratchasima to Nong Khai, linking Thailand with China via the China-Laos Railway. Developed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, the project carries a total investment of roughly 340 billion baht (USD 10.7 billion), with bidding scheduled to launch in Q3 2026. The second phase of the double-track railway development covers six routes with an overall budget of nearly 290 billion baht (USD 9.1 billion); the State Railway of Thailand will submit the scheme to the Cabinet for approval and initiate tenders in 2026. The Bangkok Red Line Extension consists of two segments with a total budget of 21.646 billion baht. Tendering is already underway, contracts are set to be signed in March 2026, and the extension is projected to open for service in 2029. Full details of these projects can be found in Blue Track Rail 2025–2026 Global Rail Transit Tender Compilation.

In terms of strategic transport corridors, the Ministry is pushing forward the Land Bridge Project with an investment volume of 997.68 billion baht (USD 31.4 billion). Thailand’s largest logistics development, the Land Bridge will connect ports on the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea, bridging the Pacific and Indian Oceans and easing shipping congestion in the Strait of Malacca. PPP tendering for the scheme is slated to start in 2026. Private investors will be granted a 50-year concession to develop commercial facilities alongside the land bridge.

Separately, the Ministry is accelerating policies to cut residents’ travel expenses. A pilot scheme allowing unlimited metro rides for a flat daily fare of 40 baht is already operational on the Red and Purple Lines. Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, stated that a reform blueprint will soon be submitted to the Cabinet. The proposal plans to place all urban metro lines nationwide under the oversight of the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) and roll out a unified smart card system to standardise ticketing and operations across all routes.

Overall, 2026 will stand as a pivotal year for transport infrastructure investment in Thailand. The full-scale advancement of high-speed rail, double-track railways, the Land Bridge and urban transit extensions is poised to deliver a historic upgrade to Thailand’s integrated transport network. These developments will power national economic expansion, cut logistics costs and significantly advance regional economic integration.
