On June 28, 2026, Seacon Shipping Group (02409.HK), a Hong Kong-listed shipping enterprise, issued a vessel acquisition announcement. Its wholly-owned Singapore subsidiary, Seacon Shipping Pte. Ltd., signed an agreement with a local shipping firm to purchase two brand-new 4,981 DWT stainless steel chemical tankers built in 2026 at a total consideration of US$39.2 million. The vessels are named MV Golden Gerbera and MV Golden Osmanthus respectively. This capacity expansion marks the Group’s formal ramp-up in the niche segment of ocean transportation of fine chemical feedstocks between Southeast Asia and the Middle East, representing another pivotal step in its diversified fleet layout.
The two chemical tankers acquired are designed and constructed in strict compliance with IMO Tier III, the most stringent international environmental standards. Equipped with an inert gas protection system, vapor recovery units and on-board wastewater pre-treatment facilities, they enable safe carriage of liquid cargoes including Category II and III industrial solvents, lubricants, vegetable oils and chemical intermediates. The vessels can smoothly pass maritime inspections at ports with rigorous environmental supervision across Southeast Asia such as Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam and Thailand, and are eligible for policy benefits including berthing charge discounts for low-carbon vessels and priority customs clearance. In terms of transaction pricing, the purchase price per vessel is lower than the fair market valuation. Leveraging its mature bargaining power in vessel procurement, the Group effectively curbs capital expenditure during its fleet renewal drive toward younger tonnage.
Seacon Shipping’s core capacity has long focused on ocean transportation of dry bulk and oil products, serving commodity trade logistics across Southeast Asia, Australia and the Middle East via its comprehensive route network. As chemical industrial parks in ASEAN nations including Vietnam, Indonesia and Malaysia have gone into mass production in recent years, regional import and export demand for fine chemical feedstocks keeps rising, resulting in a persistent tight supply-demand balance for specialized chemical shipping capacity. Upon delivery, the two new vessels will be primarily deployed on two major liquid cargo trunk routes: Southeast Asia ↔ Middle East, and Northeast Asia ↔ Southeast Asia. Relying on Singapore’s world-class petrochemical transshipment hub for cargo consolidation and distribution, the tankers will handle two-way cargo flows: basic chemical feedstocks shipped southbound from the Middle East and refined chemical finished goods exported from Southeast Asia, generating a brand-new performance growth driver for the Group.
Against the backdrop of tightening global maritime carbon neutrality policies, the full implementation of the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, CII Carbon Intensity Rating and EEXI Existing Ship Energy Efficiency Index has driven a sharp surge in compliance costs for operation and berthing of ageing, high-emission vessels. The Group consistently executes a fleet optimization strategy of “phasing out old tonnage while adding new low-carbon ships”. By mass-ordering dual-fuel and IMO Tier III eco-friendly vessels, it continuously optimizes the energy mix of its fleet. This strategy not only avoids risks of heavy fines and route restrictions imposed by carbon regulations, but also allows the Group to capture dividends from the regional green shipping market with its low-carbon capacity. As of the present date, Seacon Shipping owns and manages over 40 vessels covering four categories: dry bulk carriers, product tankers, chemical tankers and new-energy dual-fuel ships, with route networks covering major economic and trade regions worldwide.
Backed by a large-scale, young fleet and a global vessel operation & maintenance management system, the Group provides one-stop shipping solutions for global petrochemical traders and manufacturing clients, including ocean liquid cargo transportation, crew management, vessel maintenance and carbon emission compliance reporting. Industry analysts state that rising trade activity under RCEP and steady expansion of Southeast Asia’s petrochemical industrial chain will sustain long-term growth in demand for specialized, eco-friendly chemical shipping. The addition of the two eco-friendly chemical tankers further consolidates Seacon Shipping’s differentiated competitive edge in Southeast Asia’s specialized shipping niche. Moving forward, the Group will keep expanding its specialized low-carbon capacity. Supported by dual operation centers in Qingdao and Singapore, it will fully unlock opportunities brought by cross-border ASEAN trade to achieve high-quality and steady development of its core shipping business.
